Plus 94 Research conducted a public opinion survey to establish the relative strengths of SACP and COSATU within the Tripartite Alliance among the general public, and what it
would cost the ANC from a ballot point of view if it extricated itself from this Alliance. The survey, conducted in June 2006, was based on a nationally representative sample of 2000
respondents. It came very hot on the heals of COSATU and the SACP applying unprecedented pressure on the ANC leadership in terms of reflecting the broad interests of the Tripartite Alliance. Sometimes the sentiments echoed by the Tripartite Alliance partners have been so unsettling for the ANC and the country that one could be excused for mistaking them for ANC opposition, and for doing a better job at that that the opposition.

Plus 94 Research conducted a public opinion survey to establish the opinions of South Africans on whether they experience discrimination based on their race when seeking services in public places. The survey, conducted in July 2006, was based on a nationally representative sample of 1863 respondents.
The issue of racially based discrimination in South Africa is a hotly debated one, particularly because of the history of
the country and the legacy of economic imbalances. South Africans from various different race groups show sensitivity to exclusion and bad treatment. It is however, not always clear whether exclusion and bad treatment is always based on racial criteria. It could as easily be based on other variables such as gender or education levels. Be that as it may, perceptions about racially based exclusion must surely tell us something about the state of the society we live in, and if groups of people feel excluded or discriminated against, this is something that must be addressed.

The Plus 94 Poll was conducted by means of a face to face questionnaire that captured the public’s opinions on this massive project. A total of 1 530 respondents were interviewed across all nine provinces and race groups.
The following questions were included in the questionnaire:
- What kind of transport do you mainly use for your day-to-day travel?
- Do you follow developments in the media about the intention to build theGautrain?
- Would you use a rail system such as the Gautrain if it were available?
- The Gautrain will cost an estimated R20 billion. Do you think that it is a good idea to spend this amount on the Gautrain project?
- Approximately how much would you be willing to pay for a roundtrip ticket between Johannesburg and Tshwane?
